How Much Does Non-Emergency Medical Transportation Cost in Atlanta?
Non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) in Atlanta starts at $180 base plus $9.60 per mile for a wheelchair van, $420 base plus $13.20 per mile for a stretcher van, and $450 base plus $15 per mile for a BLS ambulance. Every ride has a $100 minimum, and your exact price depends on the distance between your pickup and drop-off.

What you actually pay: base rate plus mileage
Heart2Heart prices every non-emergency trip the same simple way: a base rate for the vehicle and crew, plus a per-mile rate for the distance traveled. There is no separate 'dispatch fee', no fuel surcharge, and no per-minute meter that runs while you sit in Atlanta traffic. If your street is closed on Memorial Drive or I-20 backs up on the way to Emory Decatur Hospital, the price on your quote is still the price you pay.
Which vehicle you need is the single biggest factor in your cost. A wheelchair van is for riders who can transfer to a seat or stay in their own wheelchair. A stretcher van is for riders who must stay lying down but are medically stable. A BLS ambulance is for riders who need a trained attendant and monitoring en route.
- Wheelchair van — $180 base + $9.60 per mile
- Stretcher van — $420 base + $13.20 per mile
- BLS ambulance — $450 base + $15 per mile
- Minimum charge on any transport — $100
A realistic Decatur-to-Atlanta example
Most of the trips we run in DeKalb County are short. A ride from a home near Candler Road in Decatur to a specialist in the Emory Decatur Hospital area is often under six miles. A ride from Decatur into Midtown or downtown Atlanta is usually eight to twelve miles. On a wheelchair van, that mileage band lands most riders in a predictable double-digit-mile fare rather than the four-figure ambulance bills people fear after an emergency-room trip.
Because the mileage piece changes with every address pair, we will not print a single flat 'Atlanta price' on this page and let you find out later that it did not apply to you. Put your two real addresses into the trip calculator and you will see the exact number, itemized, before you commit to anything.
What is included at no extra charge
Some of what other providers bill as extras is standard on every Heart2Heart ride, because a medical trip that ends at the curb is not a finished trip.
- Door-through-door assistance — we come inside at pickup and walk you all the way in at your destination
- Comfort package — blanket, climate control, and bottled water on board
- One companion rides free — a spouse, adult child, or caregiver, space permitting
- A medical escort is included on every BLS ambulance transport
Optional add-ons, priced up front
You only pay for an add-on if you choose it, and each one shows as its own line on your quote before you pay.
- Lift Assist — $75. Our crew physically assists between bed, chair, and stretcher.
- Extra Stop — one vehicle base fare per additional pickup or drop-off along the route (wheelchair $180, stretcher $420, BLS ambulance $450), plus the added mileage. A pharmacy on the way home is the most common one.
- Additional companions — $25 each after the first, who rides free.
How you pay, and what insurance does not cover
Non-emergency medical transportation in Georgia is largely a private-pay service, and we would rather tell you that plainly on this page than after we arrive. Heart2Heart bills insurance for medically necessary transports such as dialysis, wound care and emergency-department related trips. Coverage depends on the patient's plan and is never guaranteed, and we do not bill Medicaid. Doctor appointments, hospital discharges, senior outings, and every other trip are private pay.
Heart2Heart does not accept Medicaid under any circumstances. If you are a Georgia Medicaid member, your plan's non-emergency transportation broker arranges those rides, not us.
Private-pay trips are paid by card; call dispatch at (678) 696-1583 with payment questions. That matters most for recurring trips, where a monthly plan is easier to absorb than a series of one-off charges.
Trips outside our primary DeKalb service zone
Our base is at 297 Candler Rd in Decatur, and our primary zone reaches about fifteen miles out from there — which covers most of DeKalb County and the eastern half of the city of Atlanta at no extra charge. When either the pickup or the drop-off sits farther out than that, an extended-area fee applies to cover the empty miles the vehicle drives to reach you. That fee is calculated from whichever end of your trip is farthest from our Decatur base, charged once, never twice. Beyond sixty miles we stop auto-quoting and give you a custom price over the phone.
