How Much Does Wheelchair Van Transportation Cost in Atlanta & DeKalb County?

Wheelchair van transportation with Heart2Heart costs $180 base plus $9.60 per mile, with a $100 minimum on any trip. That covers a wheelchair-accessible vehicle with a hydraulic lift or ramp, a trained driver, door-through-door assistance, and one companion riding free.

Why the wheelchair van is the right call for most riders

A wheelchair van is the least expensive medical vehicle we operate, and for the majority of DeKalb County riders it is also the correct one. If you use a manual or power wheelchair, a walker, or simply cannot manage a car door and a curb safely, this is your vehicle. You stay in your own chair, secured with a four-point restraint system, and the lift does the work that a family member's back used to do.

You do not need a wheelchair van just because you are unsteady on your feet — many of our riders walk short distances with help. But you do need one instead of a rideshare if getting in and out is the hard part of the trip, or if a driver leaving you at the curb would put you at risk.

The math on a typical DeKalb County trip

At $180 base plus $9.60 per mile, short local trips stay genuinely affordable. Most of the wheelchair rides we run in Decatur, Avondale Estates, Candler-McAfee, Belvedere Park, and East Atlanta are under ten miles each way. Trips to the Emory Decatur Hospital campus, a primary care office off Church Street, or a specialist in Midtown all fall in that band.

Round trips are the other thing worth planning for. If your appointment is short — an infusion, a lab draw, a follow-up visit — our wait-and-return round trip keeps the same driver and vehicle with you rather than sending you back into the scheduling queue. If your appointment is long or open-ended, book two one-way trips instead. The calculator prices both so you can compare before you decide.

What is standard on every wheelchair ride

    • A wheelchair-accessible vehicle with a lift or ramp and proper securement
    • Door-through-door assistance in both directions — not curb-to-curb
    • Comfort package: blanket, climate control, and bottled water
    • One companion rides free, space permitting
    • A driver trained in safe transfers, securement, and patient handling

Add-ons that apply to wheelchair trips

Lift Assist is the add-on wheelchair riders ask about most. If the rider needs our crew to physically assist between bed and chair — not just steady them, but take the weight — that is a $75 add-on, and it is offered on wheelchair service specifically because that hands-on transfer is not part of a standard wheelchair van ride.

    • Lift Assist — $75, hands-on assistance between bed, chair, and van
    • Extra Stop — one vehicle base fare per additional stop plus the added mileage, such as a pharmacy pickup on the way home
    • Additional companions — $25 each after the first free companion

    Paying for wheelchair transport

Wheelchair van transport is a private-pay service at Heart2Heart. Insurance does not enter the picture for wheelchair trips, and we would rather set that expectation on this page than at your door. Heart2Heart bills insurance for medically necessary transports such as dialysis, wound care and emergency-department related trips. Coverage depends on the patient's plan and is never guaranteed, and we do not bill Medicaid. Heart2Heart does not accept Medicaid under any circumstances.

Private-pay trips are paid by card; call dispatch at (678) 696-1583 with payment questions. For riders with a standing weekly appointment, our membership plans bundle a set number of covered rides each month at a lower effective cost than booking one at a time.

    Where we run wheelchair vans

Our base sits at 297 Candler Rd in Decatur, which puts most of DeKalb County inside our primary service zone: Decatur, Avondale Estates, Scottdale, Clarkston, Stone Mountain, Tucker, Kirkwood, East Atlanta, Candler-McAfee, and the neighborhoods around Emory Decatur Hospital. Trips into the city of Atlanta, Midtown medical offices, and the Emory and Grady campuses are routine for us. Farther-out addresses are still welcome — an extended-area fee applies, calculated once from whichever end of your trip is farthest from our Decatur base.

    Frequently asked questions

Heart2Heart charges $180 base plus $9.60 per mile for wheelchair van transportation, with a $100 minimum. A short DeKalb County trip is far less expensive than an ambulance, and your exact price is shown in the trip calculator before you book.

Yes, substantially. A wheelchair van is $180 base plus $9.60 per mile; a stretcher van is $420 base plus $13.20 per mile. Use a stretcher only when the rider must remain lying down for the trip.

You are welcome to ride in your own manual or power chair, and most riders do. If you do not have one, tell us when you book and we will bring an appropriate chair for the trip.

Yes. One companion rides free on every trip, space permitting. Additional companions are $25 each.

Lift Assist is a $75 add-on where our crew physically assists the rider between bed, chair, and vehicle rather than simply steadying them. If the rider cannot bear weight or transfer with light help, add it — it is safer for everyone and it prevents delays at pickup.

Original Medicare does not cover non-emergency wheelchair van transportation. Heart2Heart bills insurance for medically necessary transports such as dialysis, wound care and emergency-department related trips. Coverage depends on the patient's plan and is never guaranteed, and we do not bill Medicaid. Wheelchair transport is private pay.
